Colours used

How to use it

Pick a colour from the palette (or the colour box for any colour) and draw on the grid. Fill floods an area of one colour, Picker takes a colour from the drawing, and Line and Rect draw straight shapes. Turn on Mirror X or Mirror Y to draw both halves of a symmetrical sprite at once. On a phone, draw with one finger and pinch with two to zoom and move; with a mouse, use the wheel to zoom and the Move tool to pan.

Shortcuts: B pencil, E eraser, G fill, I picker, L line, R rectangle, H move, Ctrl+Z undo, Ctrl+Shift+Z redo. Hold Space to pan.

Saving and exporting

Your drawing saves automatically in this browser. Download PNG exports at the actual size (1×) or scaled up 8×, 16× or 32×; scaling copies each pixel into a solid block, so the edges stay sharp instead of blurring. Untick the transparent option to give the PNG a solid background. Share link puts the whole drawing in the link itself, so anyone who opens it gets an editable copy. Very detailed drawings don't fit in a link; the page tells you when that happens instead of cutting the drawing off.

The palettes

PICO-8 is the 16-colour palette of the PICO-8 fantasy console, a popular starting point because the colours are chosen to work together. Game Boy is the four shades of green from the original handheld. NES-style is an approximation of the colours the Nintendo Entertainment System could show (emulators differ slightly). Grayscale gives eight evenly spaced greys for shading practice.
